Madeira is one of the most beautiful of the Atlantic Islands. Its lush valleys, green mountains and beautiful flowers simply have to be seen to be believed. Words cannot do them justice.
Another thing that is liked about the island is that it is not a mass tourist destination so quality tourism has developed and this has helped retain its true character. Old traditions have been preserved and the many celebrations include the Carnival in February/March, the Flower Festival in April and the Wine festival in September.
Madeira'[s capital city is built in an enormous amphitheatre and has many small, narrow, cobbled streets. Its got its name from the vast amounts of fennel (funcho) that used to grow there. Although its home to over half of the islands population it still has an almost village like feel to it.
A favourite spot is the market - The Mercado dos Labradores. It’s the heart of Funchal, selling fruit, vegetables, fish, meat, flowers, handbags and more, and its so full of life, colour and glamour that you really shouldn’t miss it.
Roads on Madeira tend to be narrow and winding so you need to take special care when driving around the island. Obviously the locals know their way and tend to drive at speeds you shouldn’t try to match. Most Maedeiran drivers are friendly and courteous and will make allowances for tourist’s uncertainties. There are quite a few petrol stations but its a good idea to fill up before leaving Funchal.
